(CBC News) - Vandals have attacked the Red Deer grave of a Mountie who was killed near Mayerthorpe, Alta., almost three years ago, in what police are calling “an embarrassing and disgusting act.”
The vandals chipped the headstone, destroyed flowers and stole mementos from Const. Anthony Gordon’s headstone at Red Deer’s Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Red Deer RCMP Const. Al Young said Friday.
The attack appears to have happened late on Jan. 11 or early on Jan. 12, Young said, and the grave appears to have been the only one targeted.
Gordon was one of four officers ambushed and shot dead by James Roszko in March 2005 during a police investigation on Roszko’s property northwest of Edmonton. Roszko killed himself after the shootings.
Police have no idea who vandalized the grave or why, said Young. It’s particularly distressing that this happened to the grave of a fellow RCMP officer, he said.
