(Globe and Mail) – A Toronto estate lawyer has been named the new RCMP complaints commissioner.
Ian McPhail, named interim chair for one year, was appointed by Peter Van Loan, right before he was shuffled from Public Safety minister to the International Trade portfolio.
Having started his law practice nearly 40 years ago, Mr. McPhail has periodically left law for other appointments. In the early 2000s, Ontario asked him to head an alcohol and gaming commission and, later, an environmental-review commission. Ottawa opted not to renew Paul Kennedy as complaints chair last year.
NRF,
Whither someone agrees or disagrees with that quote, there is one that is certain- It’s pretty damn funny!

A reader’s comment in the Globe & Mail:
“Given the numbers who die while in RCMP custody, having an RCMP watchdog who specializes in wills and estates seems entirely appropriate.”

What type of law did he practice-civil or criminal?
He comes from civil service in Ontario provincial politics but those positions he held were with the former Harris/Eves Conservative government. I suspect he another political apointee who got the job because of who he knew rather than what he knew.

On first blush, I would prefer a person with more precise skills relevant to the duties. I am not convinced the role requires a lawyer, but it certainly needs someone distant from any government, and experience related to the mandate.
Hot debate. What do you think?
