Taser’s links to airport death ‘junk science’

Vancouver, B.C. (Montreal Gazette) – A lawyer representing Taser International said medical expert testimony linking Robert Dziekanski’s death to the weapon is “junk science.”

Lawyer David Neave told the Braidwood inquiry investigating the Polish immigrant’s death that there was no evidence “the Taser device caused or contributed to his death.”

Dziekanski, 40, died at the Vancouver airport in October 2007 after being tasered five times by an RCMP officer.

Fifteen medical experts gave inquiry commissioner Thomas Braidwood their opinions on the effect the weapon had on Dziekanski.

The experts working for Taser International claimed the device does not cause heart failure and death, while others disagreed.

Neave said the doctors who testified the Taser contributed to the death had no scientific studies to back up their claims.

He said a severe shock would stop the heart instantly, but Dziekanski continued to struggle on the ground with police after being tasered.
