Suspended RCMP officer faces more charges

Andrew Seymour (Canwest News Service) – A suspended Mountie accused of killing an Ottawa police officer has been charged with four counts each of sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual interference involving a youth as well as possession of child pornography.

Kevin Reid Gregson was in court yesterday on charges he murdered Ottawa police officer Eric Czapnik, 51, outside the emergency room at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus in December.

A psychiatrist who examined Mr. Gregson, 43, has concluded there are no issues regarding criminal responsibility, said his lawyer, Geraldine Castle-Trudel. The lawyer said she was surprised by the assessment and intends to ask her client if he wants a second opinion.

Seeing him for the first time in court, Constable Czapnik’s widow Anna held her hand to her mouth and stared. Mr. Gregson stood in the prisoner’s box with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Details of the alleged sexual assault were not provided in court. A court-ordered publication ban prevents the reporting of any details that could identify the complainant.

Mr. Gregson had already been found fit to stand trial after it was determined he understood how the court process works. The new finding suggests he was also competent at the time Const. Czapnik was killed.

Mr. Gregson was suspended from the RCMP in 2007 after pleading guilty that year to threatening a Mormon church official with a knife.
