Surrey Mountie faces firearm charges

(Vancouver Sun) – A Surrey RCMP officer is facing charges of pointing a firearm relating to an on-duty incident last February, police said Friday.

Cst. Jason Gernhart was responding to a disturbance call at night in a park involving a group of youths where it is alleged he pointed his firearm at them, Sgt. Rob Vermuelen, Senior Media Relations Officer for the B.C. RCMP, said in a press release.

Gernhart, who had less than two years on the job at the time of the alleged incident, is also facing a separate internal Code of Conduct investigation related to this incident and has been assigned to administrative, non-operational duties, police said.

Gernhart will appear in Surrey provincial court but no date has been set.
