Conal Pierse and Andrea Sands, Edmonton, AB (EdmontonJournal.com) – Strathcona County RCMP fatally shot a 56-year-old man armed with a shotgun after an eight-hour standoff Sunday.
Police responded to a home in the area of Range Road 223 and Township Road 510 at around 9 a.m. Sunday, after receiving a phone call from the man who was threatening to harm himself with the firearm, said Cpl. Darren Anderson of Strathcona County RCMP.
Police formed a perimeter around the house, which is approximately 37 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, and were in continuous contact with him throughout the day, Anderson said.
The K Division Emergency Response Team offered assistance at the scene, and police asked nearby residents to either leave their homes or stay inside until the standoff ended.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the man came out of his house and walked toward police carrying a firearm.
The man “challenged officers with the firearm and presented it in a threatening manner,” Mounties said in a news release.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Earlier in the day, police said the man had not threatened police with the gun, and no one else was believed to be in the home.
“Our ultimate resolution is to end this peacefully, and that’s what we’re working toward,” Anderson said at the time.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to take over the investigation into the shooting.
All the officers went home, so I would say yes.
