Saskatchewan First Nation representatives calling for probe into RCMP shooting death

(Canwest News Service) Regina, SK – The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and the White Bear First Nation are calling for a public inquiry into the RCMP shooting of 21-year-old Kenneth Chase Wilfred Standingready-McKay.

The jury at last week’s coroner’s inquest into McKay’s June 14, 2008, death ruled it was a type of suicide commonly referred to as “suicide-by-police.”

McKay was fatally shot by an RCMP officer, who was responding to a domestic dispute complaint on the White Bear First Nation near Carlyle, about 200 kilometres southeast of Regina.

“We find it hard to comprehend that it was a suicide,” said White Bear First Nation Chief Brian Standingready. “Chase McKay was running away from an RCMP officer with a gun in his hand.”

Federation Vice-Chief Morley Watson told a news conference in Saskatoon that the coroner’s inquest has raised more questions that need answers — the types of answers that can only be found during a public inquiry.
