Sask. RCMP officer killed in highway accident

(CBC News) – An off-duty RCMP officer from the Craik, Sask., detachment was killed in a two-vehicle highway accident near Bethune early Wednesday.

The collision between a semi-trailer and the man’s car, a Ford Mustang convertible happened around 4 a.m. on Highway 11 near Bethune, according to RCMP. The Mustang was heading west across Highway 11 when it was hit by the northbound semi.

The Mustang was the 34-year-old officer’s private vehicle. He was the only person in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured, but was taken to hospital for examination and released.

Police haven’t identified the officer, pending notification of family members.

Highway 11 near Bethune was closed for several hours while police investigated. It was re-opened at about 11:30 a.m. This was the second fatal accident involving an RCMP officer in 24 hours.

Const. James Lundblad, 41, who was on duty with the RCMP’s traffic services unit, was killed Tuesday when his marked vehicle was involved in a collision with a grain truck. Lundblad was with the Camrose detachment.
