(CBC News) – The arrest Tuesday by the RCMP of a man on a Saskatchewan reserve will be investigated and an observer from the Saskatoon Police will be brought in, the Mounties announced late Friday.
Inspector Randy McGinnis, a manager for the RCMP, told CBC News that an officer fired shots during the arrest of Bradley Chad Gardipy, although no one was hit.
There was also a physical confrontation, McGinnis said, and the suspect and the officer were hurt.
“Anytime someone is injured or hurt, we open a statutory investigation to see if there’s any criminal wrongdoing,”
McGinnis said. “Because the member is an RCMP officer, [the investigation] will include a person, assigned by the government, to review all the files.”
McGinnis said the investigation will then be examined by lawyers from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice.
McGinnis said the RCMP will review the incident to determine if the officer followed proper policies and procedures.
He added that the Gardipy will likely face a charge of evading lawful custody and could face other charges, depending on what the investigation into the arrest shows.
According to the RCMP, Gardipy was wanted on a long list of charges including breaking and entering, assault and auto theft.
Around 6 pm CT on Tuesday, RCMP got a tip that Gardipy was spotted at a local business on the Beardy’s and Okemasis Willow Cree First Nation, near Rosthern.
