Richmond RCMP officer faces assault charges over arrest

(Vancouver Sun) – A Richmond RCMP officer is facing an assault charge in connection with an arrest in January after an investigation into the incident by Surrey RCMP.

The charge stems from an arrest made by Const. Inderpal Bal on Jan. 26, which resulted in the suspect having to be treated in hospital. An internal investigation was launched after officers at the scene expressed concern over the incident to a supervisor, Richmond RCMP Supt. Rennie Nesset said in a news release. Surrey RCMP was asked to conduct the investigation.

Bal is scheduled to appear in Richmond Provincial Court on Aug. 9. He remains at work, but under close Supervision, Nesset said. Bal will also be subject to an internal RCMP code of conduct investigation.

“Any time a police officer uses force, that force has to be justified,” said Nesset, who is the officer in charge of the Richmond detachment. “Const. Bal will now have to account for his actions in criminal court and through the RCMP code of conduct process.”
