(Winnipeg Sun) - More frontline RCMP officers in Manitoba will soon be using the latest Taser model, which delivers a lower voltage shock and records more information about each individual use.
RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said officers in all 50 detachments in Manitoba and, for the first time, some plainclothes officers are slated to receive the X26E model this spring.
She said 160 of the new Tasers have been ordered to replace the aging M26 model, which has been used by Manitoba RCMP since 2002.
“The bottom line is five or six years is a long time in terms of technology,” Karpish said. “The M26 that we have right now are at the end of their life cycle. We have to replace them.”
The X26E has better features and specifications, Karpish said.
Currently, there are 211 RCMP-issued Tasers in use in Manitoba.
Of those, 134 are the M26 and 77 are the smaller X26E, which is 60% lighter and uses six fewer batteries.
Both models have an open circuit voltage of 50,000, but the X26E delivers an actual shock of 1,200 volts, Karpish said.
The maximum shock administered by the M26 is 5,000 volts.
The X26E can be helpful to law enforcement agencies when they’re sorting through allegations of misuse.
It electronically stores the date, time, burst duration, and unit temperature for up to 1,500 firings.
