RCMP Shooting Before Crown

[Saskatoonhomepage.ca] – The Regina Police Service has completed its investigation of the RCMP shooting of a 45-year old Melfort man.

Elizabeth Popowich with the Regina Police Service says its standard procedure for an RCMP shooting to be investigated independantly.

According to Popowich, the file has now been forwarded to a Crown Prosecutor.

The original shooting incident occurred in March. RCMP have described a situation where the suspect, Joseph Longman, exited a vehicle carrying a ‘long gun’.

Details about what happened next are part of the Regina Police investigation and haven’t been confirmed, although an eyewitness reports a standoff that lasted more than 45 minutes during which time several gunshots were fired.

The man has since been arrested and held in police custody, facing a dozen charges including assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and criminal flight from police.
