RCMP say woman was pointing gun at officers when they shot her

(CBC News) – The Yellowknife RCMP have confirmed more details about a deadly shooting Wednesday.

The police say the 42-year-old woman was armed and refusing to leave the home she was in. They won’t say if the woman had bullets in her gun or if she discharged it during the incident.

A crisis negotiator spoke with her, but she eventually came out of the house carrying a long-barrelled firearm, pointing it at the officers, the RCMP said. They repeatedly told the woman to put the gun down. But, police say, when she refused they shot her. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Members of the Medicine Hat police service have been brought in to investigate. At Thursday’s news conference the RCMP said they never shoot to kill, but confirmed they aim for the centre mass.
