RCMP officer’s trial for shooting begins next fall

(Postmedia News) – Const. David Pompeo is scheduled to stand trial beginning Sept. 4, 2012 on charges of aggravated assault. According to the Attorney General’s online court registry, nine days have been set aside for the case.

The North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP officer was one of two plainclothes officers who pulled over William Gillespie, 41, and his passenger on Sept. 18, 2009, on Juniper Road in Chemainus. The traffic stop ended in gunfire, with Pompeo shooting Gillespie in the lower neck. Gillespie stated later he was not armed, did not threaten the officer and was obeying orders to get down on the ground.

Gillespie has also filed a civil claim against Pompeo in B.C. Supreme Court.

Pompeo pleaded not guilty in late August.
