RCMP officer to get Gov.-Gen. award for heroism charged with sex assault

(Canadian Press) Calgary, AB - An Alberta RCMP officer to be honoured with a Governor General’s Award for heroism is also facing charges of sexual assault.

Const. Guy Armand Raes, 51, of Airdrie, Alta., was charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and Internet child-luring charges last year after a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint.

Police allege Raes met the girl through his role as an RCMP member in 2005 and the two continued to communicate in person and via the Internet for two years.

Raes, who has been suspended with pay, along with another RCMP officer and a Calgary police officer, are being honoured this year by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean with a Star of Courage, awarded for acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril.

RCMP Const. Timothy Dunlap, Calgary police Sgt. Paul David Phee and Raes helped evacuate several homes during a massive fire on Aug. 30, 2005, pulling a young couple out to safety from a house in Airdrie, north of Calgary.

Calgary Northeast MP Art Hanger said the accusations against Raes should not take away the recognition for his act of bravery.

“If he extends himself to commit an act of bravery, it doesn’t mean you have to wipe (the honour) out.”
