RCMP officer pleads not guilty to assault

Jennifer Saltman (Vancouver Province) – A Surrey RCMP officer has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman last February.

A lawyer for Const. Imran Saeed, 30, appeared in Surrey Provincial Court Wednesday to enter the plea and elect that Saeed be tried by a provincial court judge.

Saeed was charged with one count of assault after Trina Michelle Westad alleged that on Feb. 12, 2009, Saeed pulled her over on a routine traffic stop and assaulted her when she didn’t immediately get out of her car.

She claimed in a lawsuit filed in Vancouver Supreme Court that she suffered bruising, abrasions, injuries to her neck, left arm and hand, forehead and legs as a result of the alleged assault.

A trial has been set for June 27 to 30, 2011.

Saeed is also charged with two counts of assault stemming from another alleged on-duty incident in May 2009.

In that case, Saeed was one of several officers responding to a 911 call for a domestic disturbance. Two men allege that Saeed struck them during the investigation.

His next appearance on that case is May 17, 2011.

Saeed was taken off patrol and placed on administrative leave in the fall of 2009.
