RCMP officer charged with careless use of firearm

Kelly Sinoski (Vancouver Sun) – A Kelowna RCMP officer has been charged with careless use of a firearm following a police-involved shooting of earlier this year.

The shooting occurred as police attempted to arrest a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in February this year. The man suffered gunshot wounds.

The police officer was charged following an investigation by RCMP’s E-Division major crime section. His name has not been released.

The officer will make his first court appearance on Nov. 27.

    RCMP Officer Charged with Careless Use of a Firearm

    Kelowna, BC: An RCMP member from Kelowna has been charged with one count of Careless Use of a Firearm after a police involved shooting that occurred in February 2009. The incident occurred during the attempted arrest of a male wanted on a Canada-Wide warrant. That male suffered gunshot wounds during the arrest.

    The E Division Major Crime Section’s Southeast District Major Crime Unit conducted a thorough and impartial investigation into this officer involved shooting. The investigation was conducted in conjunction with a number of other reviews including an Independent Officer Review and a Use of Force Expert. After examination and analysis of all the facts, reports and witness evidence, the investigation team submitted a Report to Crown Counsel to the Kamloops Regional Crown Counsel. An assessment by Crown resulted in the charge of Careless Use of a Firearm against the member of the RCMP.

    Crown Counsel have now laid the charge and the member will make his first court appearance on November 27th. In accordance with Provincial Division Policy the name of the Accused cannot be released until after his first court appearance.
