Roland Cilliers, Fort McMurray, AB (Fort MaMurry Today) – A local officer has been honoured for risking his life to save an aggressive stranger.
Const. Kyle Rose of the Wood Buffalo RCMP received the Commanders Certificate of Appreciation Award at a Canada Day celebration. The award is given to an officer who goes above and beyond the call of duty.
The certificate is in recognition of Rose’s performance in the summer of 2008 on the northbound Athabasca River bridge.
Rose was on a routine patrol when he came upon a man walking along the middle of the northbound lanes.
“I got out of the car and tried to speak with this person,” said Rose. “His behaviour was incredibly aggressive, and he said he was going to go kill himself. He was making his way to the middle of the road where he could jump off — I’m assuming. When I was able to talk to him he calmed down a little bit.”
Despite calming down he still crossed over the first barrier between the road and the river below. At this point he was on the sidewalk and there is only one barrier between himself and falling to the river.
According to an RCMP news release Rose remained calm and continued to talk with the man as backup arrived. When the back up did arrive the man seemed to panic and leaped over the final barrier.
“At this point I don’t really remember, but apparently I jumped over the fence thing that was in the middle and I grabbed onto the individual and pulled him over to the sidewalk where I placed him in handcuffs,” said Rose.
After being placed in handcuffs the man was given time to sober up and calm down before being moved to the hospital.
Rose said he was “quite honoured” to receive the award.
