RCMP officer accused of drunk driving back in court next month

Beverley Ware, Bridgewater, N.S. (Chronicle Herald) – The case of an off-duty RCMP officer charged for a second time with impaired driving will be back in Bridgewater provincial court next month.

Catherine Frances Mansley, 43, was arrested Easter Sunday after a vehicle went off the road by Rissers Beach in Lunenburg County.

Mansley did not appear in court this morning for her arraignment. Dartmouth lawyer Amy Gibson, who represented her, said she was appearing on behalf of lawyer David Bright who has not yet returned to work following a heart attack.

Gibson said Bright is expected back at work “within the next few weeks” and in the meantime, the law firm hopes to receive the prosecution’s case against Mansley by the end of June. Gibson said Bright will need some time to review the disclosure.

Judge Richard MacKinnon agreed to put the case over until July 7.

RCMP issued a news release shortly after the incident occurred, saying there had been a complaint that a vehicle had gone off the road, the driver was drunk and had identified herself as a police officer. By the time officers responded to the call, the car had been towed out of the ditch and the driver was gone. They searched the area, found the driver and arrested her.

Mansley was acquitted of an impaired driving charge in February in Liverpool provincial court. The judge ruled she was impaired and had open liquor in her car when an officer found her sitting in her vehicle in a local park, but acquitted her saying he was convinced she did not intend to drive her car that night.
