(Vancouver Province) – Quesnel RCMP have launched an internal probe after an allegation of excessive force during an arrest surfaced.
Officers responded to a report of a man walking near Correlieu Senior Secondary School with the handle of a gun sticking out of his waistband on March 29. Police arrested Rodney Moffat, a 49-year-old mentally challenged man, who was reportedly tackled by one of the responding officers. He suffered bruised ribs and pain in his wrists and lungs.
The suspected weapon turned out to be a large, orange and silver plastic toy space gun. After the incident, Moffat’s parents said police used too much force.
A senior RCMP member from outside the Quesnel detachment has been assigned to the investigation.
