Canadian PressRCMP are investigating two custody deaths: one in the Vancouver Island town of Tofino and the other at Penticton in the B.C. Interior.
Tofino RCMP say a 38-year-old man was arrested Saturday for public drunkenness and taken to the local jail. The man was checked by a guard early Sunday and found to have stopped breathing, then was pronounced dead at Tofino General Hospital.
In the other case, RCMP have identified a man who died in hospital Sunday after being arrested for a disturbance in Keremeos on Saturday and then transported to cells in Penticton.
Steve Qualtier, 46, had been checked by paramedics for minor injuries suffered in the altercation.
An autopsy is scheduled for some time this week.
