Police did not respond immediately to a report of an explosive device in P.E.I. National Park last weekend because of a heavy volume of calls, the RCMP said Friday.
A hiker found a homemade bomb on Sunday in dense woods near Dalvay, but the RCMP did not go to the scene until the following afternoon after a second call was placed.
An internal review revealed that a police dispatcher received the call but never sent out an officer, police said.
Sgt. Richard Thibault told CBC News on Friday that it was simply an oversight, because of a heavy volume at the time.
“We’re all humans, and I think that’s important to remember. Sometimes mistakes are made,” said Thibault.
“In this particular case, this is not something that happens every day, happens every week, or happens every month. This is a very isolated situation.”
Police are not planning to change the dispatch procedure, Thibault said, although supervisors will speak to the dispatcher on duty at the time.
