Chris Gardner (iNews 880) – A body appointed by the federal government is praising the RCMP for reforming its culture.
However, the Reform Implementation Council adds there’s still lots of room for improvement.
In its interim report, the body says the Mounties are “embracing the need to change and modernize.” But, it adds there are some areas where more reform is needed.
It says one such area is a plan to establish the RCMP as a separate body from the federal government. The sweeping reforms were recommended last year by a task force headed by David Brown, a Toronto lawyer who said the RCMP culture is “horribly broken.”
Brown also blasted the autocratic leadership style of then-commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli, who stepped down in late 2006.
William Elliott, a career bureaucrat who succeeded Zaccardelli as commissioner, is welcoming the council’s interim report. Elliott is also vowing to keep working to modernize the force.
