RCMP cruiser crashes into senior’s garage

Saskatchewan (CBC News) – An 85-year-old Canora, Sask., woman says she got the shock of her life after a police car crashed into her garage on Saturday night, wrecking the building and the car inside.

Doris Lukiniuk told CBC News said she had just sat down to watch the Telemiracle telethon Saturday night, when she heard a woosh and a bang.

She went to investigate and saw splintered wood everywhere. She also saw her car had been rammed out the other side of the garage.

In its place was a police car, with emergency lights still flashing, but no driver — the officer had left the scene.

“He came through the [median], through two lanes of traffic, down the side of the road, hit my fence and my garden, across the snowy garden, and then my garage and then the car,” Lukiniuk said.
Call for backup

According to RCMP spokesman Sgt. Brian Jones, officers usually don’t leave the scene of an accident, but in this case, the officer was responding to an urgent request for help from another member of the force.

“After he got out of the police vehicle, which was in the garage, he flagged down a passing motorist to continue on to provide assistance because he hadn’t received an update on the status of the other member,” Jones said.

After helping arrest a male suspect, the officer, who has been with the force for 11 months, returned to the scene of the crash, the RCMP said.

The 28-year-old officer, who’s from the Kamsack detachment, was taken to hospital in Canora where he was examined and released.

Lukiniuk, who wasn’t hurt, said Tuesday that the RCMP has promised to repair her car and garage, but in the meantime, she’s left without a vehicle.

“They promised me a rental car and it’s still not here,” she said.

Lukiniuk said she has been visited by several RCMP officers, but not the one she wants to talk to — the officer who crashed into her garage.

Canora is 50 kilometres north of Yorkton.
