The coroner’s service and the RCMP in British Columbia are investigating the death of a man who swallowed drugs in the back of a police car.

The 35-year-old, whose name has not been released, had been in Kelowna General since his arrest on Aug. 7.

An officer who pulled him over for erratic driving determined the man was in violation of a court order, and a woman in the car was wanted on three outstanding warrants.

While in the police car, the officer learned the man had swallowed drugs he had hidden in his mouth and an ambulance was called. After ambulance crew arrived, the man complained he was feeling ill and went into cardiac arrest.

He was revived by medical personnel and taken to hospital, where he died Thursday.
