Sue Bailey And Jim Bronskill, Ottawa (Canadian Press) – The RCMP, stung by criticism over secrecy, is rethinking its decision to strip Taser reports of crucial information after the public safety minister demanded a second look.
In a statement late Wednesday, Commissioner William Elliott said he had ordered “a further review” of recently released copies of forms detailing use of the electronic weapons “to determine if additional information” should be released.
“It is anticipated that this review can be completed within two weeks.”
A spokesman for Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said the minister “has asked for and received assurances from the commissioner that the RCMP will further review the matter.”
This is the very reason why we need a public inquiry or better still to expose what has gone wrong, clear the ones that are hurting the system and the process and appoint someone independent to make sure these future decisions are not made in favor of police and against the people and their will, as they have been.
When there’s accountability there will be a better system.
If there is no accountability there will be no good system and that is when there needs to be cover-ups in order to make it work.
The fact that there is no accountability or openness in some of these systems points to the seriousness of the brokenness of those systems.
If the leaders show a blatant disregard for the system they work in and for by going against their very oath of office, what do we expect the people will do.
With the office comes accountability, so get use to it.
