The RCMP public complaints commission suggests the Mounties’ attack dogs should be classified as “impact weapons.”
In its annual report to Parliament, the commission says attack dogs are “effective weapons for protecting public and officer safety.”
But after a dog ripped apart a suspect’s leg, the commission suggests classifying the dogs as “impact weapons” should curb the use of attack dogs on suspects who are merely unco-operative or resistant as opposed to armed, threatening or aggressive.
The report recommends that K-9 attacks be reviewed to ensure they conform with RCMP guidelines.
