RCMP asked to probe police-chief allegations

Justin Hunter (Globe and Mail) – The RCMP are conducting an investigation into mysterious allegations of wrongdoing against Victoria’s police chief.

Two weeks ago, Paul Battershill was placed on leave with pay after the local police board heard allegations against him, but those concerns have yet to be disclosed.

Yesterday, B.C. Police Complaint Commissioner Dirk Ryneveld asked the RCMP to conduct an investigation “into matters pertaining to Chief Constable Paul Battershill” but refused to elaborate.

The Victoria Police Board put Chief Battershill on leave Oct. 11 after receiving a leaked copy of an Oct. 9 letter lawyer David Mulroney wrote to the police chief’s lawyers.

The letter outlined potential conflicts of interest. Mr. Mulroney said he represents a client who filed several Freedom of Information requests related to Chief Battershill’s spending and administrative decisions.

The details contained in those information requests may be released by Victoria police Monday.
