Wagmatook, N.S. (Canadian Press) – The RCMP says an investigation into the police shooting death of a Cape Breton man last year has found no wrongdoing.
John Simon died after he was shot by an RCMP officer at a home on the Wagmatcook First Nation reserve on Dec. 2, 2008.
The RCMP announced Monday that a probe by the Halifax police determined their actions were appropriate and no laws were broken.
Simon’s common-law wife, Patsy MacKay, says she is dissatisfied with the conclusions of the probe.
She has said Simon was intoxicated and suicidal at the time of the shooting, but she denied the incident was a domestic dispute as the RCMP originally said.
The RCMP said police tried to revive Simon at the scene but they wouldn’t say whether he was carrying a gun or whether shots were exchanged.
The RCMP and Halifax police have discussed the results of the investigation with Simon’s family.
The RCMP declined to answer questions at a news conference where they announced the findings of the investigation, saying that would violate privacy rules.
