Quick thinking RCMP officers save man on fire

Edmonton Sun – Fort McMurray RCMP are hailing two of their officers as heroes after the pair saved the life of a man who lit himself on fire.

On Saturday around 11 a.m.. police responded to reports that a man was intending to harm himself.

When officers got to the residence they knocked several times and eventually busted into the home when no one responded.

Immediately, they spotted a man covered in flames.

The officers grabbed stray blankets and articles of clothing and smothered the flames until the fire was out.

They then called ambulance crews and the man was transported to an Edmonton burn unit where he remains in critical condition, police say.

“It appears right now the man set himself on fire,” said RCMP spokesman Const. Karolina Malik.

The officers were treated for smoke inhalation, but they were quickly released from a local hospital.

“This was just quick thinking,” Malik said. “They responded quickly and very properly … We’re proud and impressed and as far as I understand there’s going to be steps followed to have them recognized.”

Meanwhile, the fire department took over and put out the spotty fire in the man’s home. Neighbours were evacuated as a precaution, police say.
