Quick-thinking RCMP officer saves lost war medals

An RCMP constable in British Columbia has helped a woman in Gatineau, Que., recover four Second World War medals earned by her late husband.

The medals were found last year in a stolen vehicle in North Vancouver, said Const. Rob Pearson.

Pearson said he noticed the medals were unusual.

“I immediately recognized this hand-carved emblem that was on this plaque – it was the emblem that was used by the Van Doos, the Royal 22e Regiment,” he told CBC News.

“Off to one side was the name of Pierre Leduc, and his service number.”

Officers working on the case weren’t sure what to do with the medals, he said.

“The worst was that they were going to discard them, or sell them or something, because there was no ownership to them. So I thought, ‘I’ll take a look at them, and see what we can do,’” he said.

Pearson made some inquiries, and Leduc’s pension plan company eventually led him to his widow, Carmen, who lives in Gatineau.

She is ecstatic about having her husband’s war medals, Pearson said.
