Edmonton, AB (inews880.com) An Alberta man who was badly beaten by an RCMP officer says he did nothing to provoke the attack.
Andrew Clyburn told CTV News Saturday that he merely corrected Const. Desmond Sandboe on his last name, and the Mountie “lost it.”
The 33-year-old oil worker was arrested on Sept. 13, 2009 after a bar fight and then taken to the Lac La Biche detachment where the beating occurred. Video of the savage attack was made public after Sandboe pleaded guilty to assault on Friday.
After seeing the tape for the first time, Clyburn told CTV he found it “unreal.” Two other officers are shown on the video watching the attack, but taking no action. Clyburn told CTV he can’t believe they just stood by.
“They should have come in and helped, not just watched,” said Clyburn.
Sandboe is to be sentenced on January 27th, 2011.
The RCMP is also conducting an internal probe that will be completed after the criminal process is done.
D: I guess the last recent case of assault in Ottawa against that woman, the recent CBC Fifth Estate report on the death of Ashley Smith while in custody out west and this one now against this man from Alberta must give someone a pretty good ideal as to why there’s so many holding cell deaths accross Canada at the hands of police and prison guards.
Even though government standards are not the same accross Canada that does not negate the individual and corporate responsibility everyone has in making things right and safe for the officers to work in and the prisoners to be treated with dignity and respect and this should have been dealth with years ago.
Stop stalling and playing with the numbers at the public’s expense.
Commissioner William Elliot fix this mess, I’m tired of the excuses, do something to protect lives instead of counting the dead bodies.

Hopefully the sentence pronounced by the judge will reflect the circumstances and not the case law that mostly prevails. It will also be telling what the eventual outcome of the internal proceeding lead to.

Technology has proven itself again and again. Everyone has seen what the actual truth is.
This is more than a disgusting display of abuse Sandboe inflicted. These officers are quite accustomed to verbal provocation – this scenario wasn’t any different than what they (officers) deal with from any other individuals yelling while in custody. Being verbally accosted on a daily basis should not be interpreted as the right thing to do – but also does not justify this brutal beating.
What a horrid shame of another officer once again portraying the ultimate disrespect of our RCMP.!
The conduct of the other two individuals that just WATCHED this entire situation and did NOT DO ANYTHING to stop this -should be absolute grounds for immediate termination.
These 2 individuals should be PUBLICLY IDENTIFIED and face the disgust, ridicule, and humiliation they ALL deserve.
It is obvious that the victim should begin legal action against these THREE STOOGES, and is more than justified – no question.
I do not agree that taking legal action should be launch against the entire RCMP force.
Three individuals are the only ones responsible for this despicable act.!
Possibly the RCMP might implement different methods of psychiatric evaluations and access their members before a possible stress related breakdown occurs.

I try to keep out of these issues but it’s really, really hard sometimes.
As the RCMP wait to see what happens and standing around looking lost as usual; is this going to be like the RCMP member, that New Brunswick Commander & Former Commissioner who resigned in shame because he couldn’t tell the truth in Ottawa and cost tax payers Millions of dollars, is it going to be like the four who killed the Polish tourist at the airport in British Columbia and the two who shot and killed the Albertans one behind the head, is it going to be like the member who just pleaded guilty for refusing to take the breathalyzer test, lost his license and he still works for the force? I bet it’s the same old same old.
I do hope this sets a president for the people, as well, the Judges should be ashamed to sentence the public in some of these cases where it takes video to get to the truth and for years all we heard was it was being lost when it came to their actions.
I know now that a police officers word isn’t worth very much anymore and he will do anything to save his own behind and the image of the force he works for, I don’t need to read anymore here to come to that conclusion.
