(CBC News) - A 28-year-old man was shot by police on the Long Plain First Nation west of Winnipeg, RCMP say.
In a series of news releases, issued Saturday afternoon, RCMP said that officers from the Portage la Prairie detachment were involved.
The shooting took place Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. CT.
RCMP said they were responding to a call on the reserve.
They said the man who was shot was taken to hospital for treatment, adding he was in stable condition.
RCMP refused to say anything about what happened.
The chief of the reserve, David Meeches, told CBC News that police were called about a man who was allegedly assaulting people with a baseball bat.
Meeches said a male officer shot that man.
RCMP said their officers are trained to shoot only when they feel their lives, or the lives of others, are in danger.
They said investigators from the Regina police service will be involved in the case.
As well, RCMP said they would be communicating with the First Nation in accordance with an agreed protocol between RCMP and the Southern Chief’s Organization, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
