Poland wants those responsible for Dziekanski’s death punished

(Canadian Press) - Poland’s new foreign minister says his country intends to get to the bottom of the death of one of its citizens after RCMP officers used a Taser on him at least twice and then roughly threw him to the ground.

Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski met Thursday with Canada’s Ambassador to Poland to discuss last month’s death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski.

According to Foreign Ministry news release, Sikorski told David Preston it was Poland’s intention to “have the matter fully clarified, those responsible punished and a compensation made to the family of the deceased man.”

The news release says Preston stressed that currently there are eight investigations into the case in Canada, held in order to expose all the circumstances of the tragedy.

The Canadian diplomat expressed regret over Dziekanski’s death and confirmed the intention of the Canadian authorities to have a public investigation into the case.

Polish prosecutors in Dziekanski’s former hometown of Gliwice said Wednesday they want to find out whether RCMP officers at Vancouver’s airport exceeded their authority and unintentionally caused the death.
