Pilot used RCMP plane for caribou hunt, force says

(CBC News) – An RCMP pilot has been accused of using a Mountie airplane to hunt for caribou in Manitoba’s north.

Joey Monger, 40, of Thompson, Man., is facing a number of charges under the Wildlife Act, including hunting caribou without a licence, using an aircraft to search for caribou and using someone else’s permit to hunt.

He could also be disciplined internally, the RCMP said Friday.

Monger is a civilian employee of the force who, according to police, used an RCMP aircraft on a number of occasions to search for caribou in the Brochet and Lac Brochet areas in Manitoba’s far north.

Police say the allegations relate to incidents between Jan. 19 and March 10 and that some of them took place while Monger was on duty.

Monger was charged earlier this week and is scheduled to make a court appearance July 23. The Wildlife Act violations could result in fines of up to $1,300.

For now, Monger is still on active duty.
