Kim Bolan, Vancouver, B.C. (Vancouver Sun) – The Ontario Provincial Police has been called in to investigate allegations that an RCMP officer on the Surrey Six murder case had an affair with a witness.
Last month, the RCMP said an internal review was underway into the conduct of Sgt. Derek Brassington, a senior Mountie who played a key role in the probe of six gangland slayings in Surrey in December 2007.
Both police and Crown counsel said the witness in question did not provide any information that was used by prosecutors to decide on criminal charges in the investigation.
The OPP was brought in accordance with the RCMP’s new national review policy announced Feb. 4.
A news release said Brassington’s duty status is under review.
Last month, the RCMP said the officer was on desk duty, still working for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, though not on the Surrey Six case.
Brassington has been on the force for 14 years.
Six gangsters have been charged in the Surrey Six case.
