Barb Pacholik (Calgary Herald) – One day after being criticized for his abrasive nature, RCMP Commissioner William Elliott said Wednesday he “fundamentally disagrees” with the negative assessment of his leadership style.
Canada’s top Mountie told reporters in Regina he didn’t bother to watch much of the testimony given in Ottawa Tuesday before a Commons public-safety committee.
“Actually, I had better things to do with two hours yesterday than that,” Elliott said. “I saw about 10 minutes of it, and I got a bit of a summary with respect to what was said.”
Deputy commissioner Raf Souccar and former assistant commissioner Mike McDonell had spoke Tuesday of attempts to resolve their management problems with Elliott internally. When they were unable to do so, they took their concerns last summer to senior government officials -a move that brought to a head a revolt within the RCMP’s ranks.
McDonell, who eventually left the force, accused Elliott of treating staff in a “brutal, disrespectful, intimidating, and careless” manner, while Souccar said it was clear that the next commissioner would have to be a cop.
“I guess I’d point out (that) they’re allegations. It’s old news from my perspective,” said Elliott, in Regina for a change-of-command ceremony for the RCMP’s F Division.
He added he doesn’t believe the testimony accurately reflects reality.
“Whatever picture they have of me or the RCMP is based on their experience that goes back half a year ago. We have turned the page; we are moving forward.”
The Harper government announced last week that Elliott -the RCMP’s first civilian commissioner -will step down this summer.
You must be younger to state that these issues at 20 years old. I can date it back to about 30 years.
The problem is that the governments will not step in and have allowed the police to police itself and it’s got out of hand. Sort of like having a spoiled child who wants it’s way all the time, cries and causes trouble till he gets what he wants.
I don’t see them changing this practise so soon.

Good points D Elliott should line em up & fire, retire or re assign the cry babies. Funny they can point their fingers at Elliott & not feel at all guilty about themselves, very selfish & self-righteous. It going to get way worse when Rod Knecht shows up for the head job. The management will never learn, they think everything is fine. It funny though that they can get away with anything they want. Elliotts leaving as life to short to be playing like a dog whos chasing his tail.
