No internal probe after former RCMP officer convicted

(CJCD Mix 100 News) Yellowknife, N.W.T. – There’s no need for the RCMP to do an internal investigation into a former sergeant convicted on two charges, according to a police spokesperson.

Cpl. Wes Heron said the police already investigated the stolen money from the detachment, resulting in Sgt. Larry O’Brien being charged.

O’Brien pleaded guilty to breach of trust by a peace officer and uttering a forged document, after attempting to cover up $2,000 stolen from a police locker.

Since he’s been convicted and is now retired from the force, Heron said the case is closed.

“Mr. O’Brien was duly charged and convicted in a court of law, so hence an internal would serve no purpose,” he said.

A judge sentenced O’Brien to six months in jail last week.

Heron said the Mounties do not have an official response to the sentencing, as O’Brien is no longer an officer, adding the RCMP respects the judgment of the court.
