( Victoria Times Colonist) – Nanaimo RCMP officers will not be charged over the shooting death of Jeffrey Scott Hughes in October 2009.
Victoria Police detectives concluded their criminal investigation into the death of Hughes, 48, who was killed by Mounties outside his Selby Street apartment on Oct. 23, 2009. They found no basis to recommend criminal charges, Staff Sgt. Grant Hamilton said Saturday.
Despite an exhaustive criminal investigation “we didn’t find anything based on the investigation, interviews or forensics that would warrant criminal charges,” Hamilton said. “They did everything they should have.”
The RCMP officers could still face internal discipline.
The police have refused to release information such as how many officers were involved, how many shots fired and whether Hughes had a weapon.
The case has been turned over to the B.C. Coroner’s Service. An inquest will be held in Nanaimo in July. The coroner will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding Hughes’s death. The proceedings are open to the public. Inquests are mandatory for deaths in police custody.
