Nanaimo-based Mountie cleared in teen’s fall down cliff

Nanaimo, B.C. (Victoria Times Colonist) – An RCMP officer in Nanaimo has been cleared of wrongdoing after an 18-year-old man was seriously hurt when he fell down a cliff while fleeing police.

The teen, who had presented a fake ID at a nightclub in Nanaimo, fled from Mounties around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 30. An officer followed him but lost sight of him.

The Mountie provided a description of the man and, within minutes, officers found him lying at the bottom of the cliff.

Officers with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit conducted an external investigation into the incident.

The review, headed by a senior Victoria police officer, determined the officer “acted in accordance with his duties.”

The man’s injuries were sustained because he was unfamiliar with the area, not because he was chased by the officer, said Victoria police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton said.

The man is out of hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

  1. Let me get this head line straight. Underage teens in a bar illegally, has fake ID, police called, teens run, teens fall over cliff running from a police officers who doing his/her job, officer then finds the teen at bottom of cliff and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime unit conduct an external investigation into the incident. How much did that cost the tax payer to investigate a police officer doing his/her job? It’s almost at the point Officers are not going to follow up on any reported crime for fear of reprisal from the public. Why would any NCO or Officer in Charge of detachment even consider calling Major Crime Unit for this incident? To the NCO or OIC I say, grow a back bone, your spineless, you fail in your leadership role. Your member(s) did nothing wrong but do his/her job. This member deserves a public apology and an ad-a-boy from the boss (form-1004)

Ps if the teen’s family complained about the officer, they family should be made to pay the wages of the Major Crimes Unit for the time spent investigating this complaint.

Pss it’s no wonder police officers are going on stress leave

  2. We have obviously failed the miscreant as a society….. The fact that valuable resources were expended is a sign of the times. No personal responsibility means incessant hand-wringing.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 18 Thumb down 12

  3. Someone runs from the police and then falls off a cliff, and somehow someone thinks it’s the fault of the police and not the guy who was fleeing lawful arrest.

    What a waste of time!
