(Canadian Press) – New Westminster, B.C. – An off-duty RCMP officer accused of obstructing justice in a fatal motorcycle accident testified he didn’t down two shots of vodka in an attempt to thwart the investigation.
Cpl. Monty Robinson spoke in a steady voice as he described walking his children home from the crash site, getting them settled upstairs and then drinking the alcohol.
He told his B.C. Supreme Court trial that he didn’t know what he was thinking at the time, but went behind his bar to get what had given him “comfort” in the past.
His trial has heard Robinson told the police officer who arrested him after the October 2008 collision that he drank two shots of vodka to calm his nerves shortly after his vehicle slammed into a motorcyclist.
The judge-alone trial was told the veteran officer took a course three years before the accident where he learned that people may escape a drunk driving charge if they consume alcohol after a crash.
The crash killed 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson, who was driving the motorcycle that collided with Robinson’s Jeep at a Delta, B.C., intersection.

Ask any “street lawyer” about DUI and they will tell you to have a couple of drinks after a wipeout to break the continuity of evidence and that if you are drinking and driving Vodka is the drink of choice as it has less odor.
These tactics are as old as Henry Ford…..
