Mountie placed on probation for assault

CBC News

An RCMP officer has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault, in connection with an altercation involving a prisoner at the Terrace detachment cells nearly three years ago.

Const. Brendan McKenna has been ordered to pay a victim surcharge of $50 and serve a year’s probation.

That conditional discharge means he won’t have a criminal record if he complies with the terms of his probation.

McKenna and Const. Bryden Hennessey were charged after a man was Tasered at the Terrace cells in October 2003.

The man filed a complaint that excessive force had been used against him, prompting an internal RCMP investigation. That led to a charge of assault with a weapon against the two officers.

Hennessey pleaded guilty to assault last year, and was also given a conditional discharge. He was subsequently docked three days’ pay by the RCMP.

Both men remain on active duty.
