Mountie faces sex charges

A veteran RCMP officer has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and luring a child over the Internet.

The charges stem from a five-month investigation following a complaint from a 17-year-old girl, said Sgt. Patrick Webb of the RCMP. “They are very serious charges,” Webb said.

He said the girl was 15 when Const. Guy Armand Raes, 50, of the Airdrie RCMP, allegedly started communicating with her over the Internet.

“There was a fair amount of contact between them over the two years, but (only) some of it resulted in the charges,” Webb said.

In February, the teen lodged a complaint with the RCMP. “She basically came to the realization that she thought there was something inappropriate happening.”

Raes, a 21-year RCMP member, has been suspended with pay since February. Webb said Raes will remain off duty while the matter is before the courts.

Webb said Raes will also be subject to an RCMP code of conduct probe after his criminal trial.
