(Irwin Loy) 24 Hours – RCMP in B.C. plan to buy 40 new Taser weapons, according to a public bid document.
The move comes after the head of the RCMP announced the Mounties had tightened its policies on how the energy weapons could be used, and amidst an ongoing inquiry into the death of Robert Dziekanski, the Polish immigrant who died after he was jolted by RCMP Taser guns.
The force is budgeting $50,000 for the new Taser guns, or conducted energy weapons, according to the bid document. RCMP intend to source the weapons from M.D. Charlton Law Enforcement Equipment and Sporting Goods, a B.C.- based distributor.
The order is for 40 units of the Taser model X26E, a newer version of the M26 model that RCMP officers use. According to the document, the force currently owns more than 1,500 units of the old model.
The newer model, according to the document, “produces a more effective, and yet safer, level of current on reduced power requirements.”
It also allows the recording of details likes date, time and duration of usage each time the weapon is fired.
When asked for comment, RCMP in B.C. referred 24 hours to RCMP in Ottawa, who did not return a phone call by deadline yesterday.
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association, frequent critics of police Taser usage, has called for a moratorium on the controversial weapons.
“It’s disappointing to know that the RCMP is investing resources in a weapon whose safety has still not been demonstrated,” said acting executive director David Eby.
Thank you for your apology.
READ the information provided even in the newspapers and you will see that the actions of the cops did not contradict the law. In other words their actions were not criminal, even though you wish them to be to extract some kind of revenge. If it turns out that their actions were deemed NEGLIGENT there is plenty of civil remedy. Even if millions are involved and new procedures put in place or people are fired, it will still not satisfy everybody. Hence the ludicrous comment about extradition to Poland to stand trial for murder.
There is small issue of INTENT. Unless the Crown feels they went in there to kill him there is no INTENT.
Without the distinctions in law we are in the “string them up on the nearest tree” mode. Which no doubt would satisfy you at the moment, until of course the mob came for you.
Just because you do not understand the intricacies of the legal system, do not try and substitute junk yard justice for it.
Millions did not go missing in the pension fund either. Funds were used contrary to pension fund rules authorized by people who were not authorized to do so. Nothing went missing. Its all in black and white where it went. READ the information.

Well I’m sorry you are offended at the gay comment.
Maybe I shouldn’t have made this kind of comparison, so except my appology Deepthroat.
All I want to do is try and understand why things always work out for the police when someone dies and lies are flying. Why must we protect police from the very laws in place that should be there also to protect us Canadians, that’s all.
When Millions go missing in pention funds at the highest level of the RCMP that we Canadians must give back and someone comes forth to say why and before the questions get answered the proceedings are stopped, the officers are promoted with several police forces involved and nothing is wrong – that in itself raises very serious questions here and as you know there is more.
Then we have this inquiry staged with promises made not to charge those officers even before the proceedings begin…. do you see a pattern here and why someone looking into these cases could get a little concerned?

Seems my earlier comment did not make it, so I reiterate Alcan, your reference here to gays is offensive.

Stats should be kept in all areas…. and should be mandatory in all police occurances when weaponds are used and deployed with no exceptions and emediately. This would get rid of the cowboys and allow the ones with wisdom=applied knowledge and reasoning to be the ones deployed in some of these situations.
It’s easy to say your life is danger when you are 5′2″ but if there four huge police officers how can this be unless they are gay or something…..

Too bad nobody thought of keeping stats on the injuries caused by batons.

Tasers arent risk free, but i am glad they are getting more. I would rather they shot the wrong duers with a taser than a gun, or instead of the other person shooting a member of the RCMP.
