Montreal police officer arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking

Canadian Press, June 27, 2006

MONTREAL (CP) – A city police officer who worked at the airport was charged Monday with drug trafficking, money laundering and breach of trust.

Pierre Goulet, an officer who has been on the force for about 14 years and worked at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, was arrested earlier Monday after a lengthy investigation by the force’s internal affairs department, Montreal police said.

Sgt. Ian Lafreniere said the officer’s alleged wrongdoings didn’t take place when he was on the job.

Police said the alleged crimes occurred between 2000 and 2002 and involved an organized crime group.

Lafreniere said “this is one case in particular” and isn’t a reflection of the city’s entire police force.

“This is not the kind of case we are proud of,” he added.

Goulet, 41, is expected to be back in court on Tuesday and could face other charges, police said.

Police Chief Yvan Delorme said in a statement the officer has been suspended without pay until the end of judicial proceedings.

Delorme will hold a news conference on Tuesday about the arrest.
