(CBC News) – A man rushed to hospital in Winnipeg last week after collapsing in an RCMP holding cell in his northern Manitoba community has died, police said on Monday.
The 59-year-old Nelson House man came into police contact twice on Dec. 30, Sgt. Line Karpish said.
At about 6:45 p.m. CT, officers in the northern community were called to a local VLT gaming lounge where the 59-year-old was found passed out, unresponsive and believed to be intoxicated, Karpish said. Local paramedics were called and he was taken to the local nursing station.
At about 10:15, the man was allegedly causing a disturbance at the nursing station and police were called.
Officers arrived at the facility and arrested him without incident, Karpish said. He was taken and held at the local jail.
Some time after being held there — Karpish didn’t say exactly how long — officers found him unresponsive in a cell. Paramedics were summoned and he was taken back to the nursing station for treatment.
It was ultimately decided that because of the man’s grave condition, he needed to be flown by air ambulance to Winnipeg.
Karpish said the man died at the Health Sciences Centre early Sunday morning.
An autopsy was scheduled to take place on Monday to determine his exact cause of death.
Police did not identify him. Major crime and forensic investigators from Winnipeg and Thompson are in Nelson House and continue to investigate.
The community is located 850 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
