Man shot dead outside Nanaimo apartment this morning

(Victoria Times Colonist) – A man was fatally shot outside a downtown apartment building in Nanaimo this morning.

Nanaimo RCMP say the man died after an altercation outside a building on Selby Street. Police say they were responded to a disturbance call at the building at about 7 a.m.

Several residents who looked outside saw officers crouched, with guns drawn, said it was a woman officer involved in the shooting.

Witnesses report hearing as many as 10 gunshots.

Selby Street is blocked off and several officers, including those with forensic identification and serious crimes units, remain at the scene.

At mid-morning the body remained outside, hidden by sheets strung along property fences.

Police said the Selby Street address is known to them and neighbours said they are used to seeing police activity in the area. They were not surprised to learn of the shooting.

Police expect to release more information this afternoon.

Tim Viney has lived in the 12-unit, three-storey building for about a month. He heard what he thought was a gunshot this morning, but could not say if he heard more than one shot. He said the neighbourhood around the apartment is noisy and the building has problems with rowdy tenants.

Nanaimo city records show the area has several medium-density multi-family housing units.
