Dave Dormer (Calgary Sun) – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man died early Wednesday while in police custody on the Blood Reserve.
A 48-year-old man was arrested by the Blood Tribe Police Service on Tuesday evening for breach of recognizance — being drunk — and when police checked on him in a cell hours later, he was unresponsive.
Paramedics were called but the man was pronounced dead.
The man went to the police station on his own and was arrested when police smelled alcohol on his breath, said ASIRT executive director Clifton Purvis.
His name has not been released by investigators.
