Man found dead in RCMP cell in northern Manitoba

(Windsor Star) - A 37-year-old man was found dead Saturday in an RCMP holding cell in northern Manitoba.

Police said the man was arrested for public intoxication Friday evening and taken to the detachment in Thompson, Man., where he was placed in a cell.

The next morning he was discovered dead.

His body has been sent to Winnipeg for an autopsy.

Several units of the RCMP are probing the death, including the forensic identification unit.

The Mounties didn’t release the man’s name, saying they still needed to notify his family.

Thompson is about 750 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

    RCMP investigate cellblock death of Jeffrey Ray Mallett

    (RCMP Press Release) Thompson, MB - RCMP are investigate the sudden death of 37 year old Jeffrey Ray Mallett of Cross Lake First Nation who was in custody at Thompson RCMP Detachment. Jeffrey Mallet was arrested by the Thompson RCMP in the evening of July 18th for public intoxication and was found deceased in a holding cell the following day.

    An autopsy is scheduled for July 21, 2008 at the Health Science Center in Winnipeg.

    The “D” Division RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, Thompson RCMP Major Crime Unit, Thompson Forensic Identification Section along with members of the Thompson RCMP continue to investigate.
