Man dies in RCMP custody

Kamloops, B.C. (Canadian Press) – The RCMP in Kamloops, B.C., and the coroner’s office are investigating why a man died in police custody Tuesday afternoon.

Sergeant Scott Wilson says the 44-year-old was found passed out in the street just after midnight on Sunday.

Paramedics were called, and after the man woke up, police discovered he was wanted for violating a parole condition and took him into custody.

Sgt. Wilson says about 12 hours later, the man became unresponsive and was not breathing.

The man, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to hospital and died Tuesday afternoon.

An autopsy will be conducted on Friday.
